Power Yoga Sculpt: Focus on your alignment
Sculpt yoga is a Power Flow sequence incorporating weights, ranging from 1 to 5 pounds. Some traditionalists of yoga or even those new to yoga may ask ‘why would that practice ever be done?’
It’s a good question and here’s the main reason why: weights at that range encourage the shoulders to stay in their shoulder girdles. The amount of weight is not too heavy; it’s just the right amount of weight to stay in alignment. Some Iyengar teachers will have their students use weights and hold the weights in Warrior 2 for an extended period of time. Take an inventory in your next yoga class in Warrior 2 and notice what your shoulders are doing. Are your shoulders in their sockets or are your shoulders coming up to meet your ears?
Incorporating a Sculpt class in your daily yoga practice not only encourages alignment but also increases your bone density, increases muscle mass, increases metabolism, and is great for your rhomboids. Once you get through your Sun A with the weights, you actually feel yourself noticing your alignment and how much the weights encourage alignment, without weighing you down. This recognition of your alignment will translate into more traditional yoga classes or other exercise regimens you incorporate.
Without question, Sculpt is a great workout and you burn a lot of calories through the movement and incorporation of weights; however, gaining the knowledge of your body’s alignment and how that alignment applies to other disciplines is the most important benefit. Sculpt encourages healthy posture. Having healthy posture helps us walk taller and sit more aligned with the shoulders over the hips as opposed to hunching forward. Encouraging our shoulders to stay in their girdles and encouraging the spine to lengthen, helps ward off neck pain and lower back pain.
